Well now, let me tell ya ’bout this ol’ fella, Miguel Cabrera. Ya see, this man, he’s been playin’ ball for a mighty long time, and now he’s retirin’. 2023 was his last season, and boy, teams all around the league gave him somethin’ special. It’s a nice way of showin’ respect for all the years he’s played, and all the memories he’s made, right? Ain’t no way to forget a player like that.
First off, the Marlins, well they handed him a bottle of rum and a box of cigars. Now, I ain’t one to drink much myself, but I reckon that’s a mighty fine gift. A bit of the ol’ rum and cigars for a man who’s done so much in his career, sounds like a celebration to me.
Then, ya got the Astros. They gave him a bottle of wine from ol’ Dusty Baker’s own vineyard. Ain’t that somethin’? They didn’t stop there though. They also handed him a custom cowboy hat. Now, I don’t know about you, but a cowboy hat seems like a good ol’ fashion way to show some respect for a legend like him. It’s got that rugged, tough look to it.
And then, the A’s, now they weren’t just givin’ any ol’ bottle of wine. They gave him one, sure, but they also gave him a 24 bucket hat, a sliver hockey stick, and get this—$5,000 donation to his foundation! That’s somethin’ real special, ain’t it? They didn’t just show respect, they showed they cared about his legacy off the field too.
The Baltimore Orioles, now they really knew how to make a moment special. They gave Miggy a B&O Warehouse brick from Camden Yards, along with a gold plaque to celebrate his career. Seems like they wanted to give him somethin’ that’d last forever, somethin’ that’d always remind him of his time in the game. Ain’t that just sweet?
Now, the Milwaukee Brewers, they didn’t miss a beat either. They not only made a donation to his foundation but also gave him a custom-made leather jacket. I bet that jacket was somethin’ real fancy, the kind that’d make you look sharp on a cold day.
Before his final game with the Tigers, the Dodgers gave him one last gift—a framed Hollywood star. Now, that’s the kind of gift a man like him deserves. They didn’t just honor him as a player, they treated him like a movie star. Kinda makes you think he mighta been a legend in more ways than one, don’t it?
And of course, there was J.D. Martinez. He’s a former teammate of Cabrera’s, and they’ve been workout partners for a long time. J.D. and Miggy must’ve shared a lotta memories on and off the field, and it was nice to see that friendship come full circle with all these tributes.
It’s nice to know that teams across the league didn’t just give him a handshake and send him on his way. They gave him real gifts, things that show they appreciated all the years he put in. It wasn’t just about baseball. It was about the man he is, the legacy he’s built, and the way he treated others along the way. Every gift had a little bit of thought behind it, like a piece of his career that they’d hold onto, too.
In total, Cabrera and the Tigers visited 22 big-league teams in 2023. Out of those, 21 teams gave him a gift to remember. That’s a whole lotta love from across the league, don’t ya think? Even the teams where Cabrera didn’t have much of a history still found a way to honor him. Seems like everybody wanted to say thank you, one way or another. It wasn’t just a farewell, it was a celebration of a whole career, from the first hit to the last.
As a fan of the game myself, it just warms my heart to see how much respect Cabrera got from his peers. There ain’t many players like him, that’s for sure. He’s been a part of baseball for years, and now as he heads into retirement, it’s clear he’s left a mark that won’t soon be forgotten.
So, here’s to you, Miguel Cabrera. You’ve had a mighty fine career, and I reckon these gifts are just a small way of sayin’ thanks for all the memories you’ve given us over the years. You deserve all that and more.
