Okay, so I got curious the other day about how tall the average wide receiver in the NFL is. You know, just one of those random thoughts that pop into your head. I figured it couldn’t be that hard to figure out, so I decided to dive in and see what I could find.

Started with a Simple Search
First things first, I hit up the internet. I figured there had to be some articles or lists out there already that might have the answer. I typed in some basic searches like, “average wide receiver height NFL,” and stuff like that.
I found some general information, hints about the typical range, but nothing super concrete on the “average”. I wasn’t surprised. It probably changes, I mean are we talking about the active player? Or all of them?
Digging Deeper
It became clear pretty quickly that I needed data, and not only one or two lines of data, I need a bunch of data. I’m not a data scientist, so I’m keeping things very simple. I thought: “Where can I find a big list of NFL players, specifically wide receivers, with their heights?”
The Process
- Find a sourceI searched for websites listing current NFL rosters, ideally with player stats like height.
- Filter, Filter, Filter: Once I find a good roster, I filtered it to show just the wide receivers.
- Data CopyNext, I needed to get all the data from the website’s table into some kind of readable format. It took me a while to figure out how to achieve.
- Calculate the Average: I knew I could do this, but it would be a lot of manual work.
The (Not-So-Pretty) Solution
After trying to find a simple list to work with, I realized it’s way messier than that. I had to manually look at lots of numbers.
Finally, I am able to get the average height successfully.
