Okay, so I was looking up this Colby Covington guy today, right? He’s a pretty big name in the MMA world, and I wanted to know more about where he came from. So, I started digging into his early life, specifically his high school days.
First off, I found out that Colby was born in Clovis, California, but he grew up in a place called Springfield, Oregon. That’s where he went to Thurston High School, a public high school in Springfield.
Next, I searched for what he did during his time there. Turns out, this guy was a beast on the wrestling mat even back then. He was on the varsity wrestling team all four years of high school. I mean, he lettered all four years! That’s from a freshman at 112 pounds to a senior at 171 pounds! Can you believe it?
- Freshman year: Joined the varsity wrestling team.
- Sophomore year: Kept at it, honing his skills.
- Junior year: Continued to dominate, getting better each year.
- Senior year: Won the 171 lb state championship in 2006.
In his senior year, 2006, he won the Oregon state championship in the 171-pound weight class. I bet that was a big moment for him and the school. I also learned that his dad was a big-time college wrestler, so you could say wrestling is in his blood.
I kept digging and discovered that after high school, Colby went on to wrestle in college. He definitely didn’t stop after Thurston.
Lastly, I looked into what he’s up to now. This led me to his MMA career, where he’s with the American Top Team. He joined them back in 2012, training under some guy named Mike Brown. Apparently, the gym’s owner, Dan Lambert, got him in.
It’s pretty cool to see how someone can go from being a high school champ to a pro fighter. That’s all I found for now on Colby Covington’s high school story. I might look into his college career next, who knows?
