Well, today I wanna talk about something I’ve been digging into lately – the Kansas City Royals managers. It’s a bit of a rabbit hole, but a fun one!
So, I started by figuring out when the Royals even became a thing. Turns out, it was way back in 1969. And guess what? They had this contest to name the team, with over 17,000 entries! A bridge engineer named Sanford Porte came up with the winning name. Pretty cool, huh?
Now, about those managers. The first guy to take the helm was Joe Gordon, also in 1969. I made a little list of the first few managers, just to get a sense of the early days:
- 1969: Joe Gordon
- 1970: Charlie Metro (part of the year)
- 1970-1971: Bob Lemon (took over from Charlie)
I kept going with this, tracking down each manager and their record, and let me tell you, there have been 17 of them in total! It was like putting together a puzzle, finding all these pieces of the Royals’ history.
Compiling all these names and their records, I realized, it’s not just about the wins and losses. Each manager brought their own style and strategy. Some, like Bob Lemon in ’71, had pretty good runs. I started to see how each manager’s time with the team shaped its history.
In the end, I had this big picture of the Kansas City Royals through the lens of their managers. From 1969 with 4208 wins and 4623 losses up to now. It’s been a wild ride following their journey, and honestly, it made me appreciate the team even more. Each manager, each season, it’s all part of the Royals’ story, and I’m here for it!
It’s amazing how much you can learn just by following your curiosity. Who knew I’d become such a Royals history buff? But that’s the fun of it, right? You start with one question, and before you know it, you’re knee-deep in all this fascinating stuff.
And that’s pretty much how I ended up spending my week. Hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane with me. Maybe next time, I’ll tackle another team’s history. Who knows where this journey will take me!
