Okay, so I saw this headline, “kind of kick in football nyt crossword,” and I was like, what the heck is that? I’m not a huge football guru, but I do enjoy a good crossword puzzle, so I decided to dig in.

First, I grabbed my phone and opened up the NYT Crossword app. Gotta have my daily dose of wordplay, you know? I scrolled through to find the puzzle with that clue.
Once I found it, I stared at the clue and the empty spaces for a bit. “Kind of kick in football…” Hmmm. My brain was churning. Was it going to be something super obvious that I’d kick myself for not getting instantly? Or something totally obscure?
I started by trying to think of different kinds of kicks. There’s the kickoff, of course, but that didn’t seem to fit. Field goal? Nope. Punt? Still no. Extra point? I typed in the answer in the spaces.
Then, a lightbulb moment! I thought about those onside kicks, the super tricky ones, and I realized that it is a really “kind of kick”. It is, and it fit! I use the hint and bang, it told “onside”. I slapped myself on the forehead, “ONSIDE” of course!
So yeah, that’s my little adventure with today’s crossword clue. It was a good reminder that sometimes the answer is right in front of you, you just gotta think about it a little differently. Or, in this case, take the clue very, very literally!
